80. Clearing Success Congress
As a fitting finale to the Scientology Congresses, L. Ron Hubbard’s last came right from the topmost level. It was the breakthrough that would lead to the development of the Clearing Course, the Grade Chart and the Organizing Board. It was a discovery that embracive, that basic—because it is Basic Purpose. As he reveals, “Every engram we have explored, every piece of black mass, every ridge, every white-burning fire, every everything that went on in the mind comes about because of a change or alteration in a person’s Basic Purpose.” And that’s just the beginning of what Mr. Hubbard discovered, for when you hear his lecture, Basic Purpose, you’ll have a whole new understanding of what “Know Thyself” really means.
Yet beyond all this discovery was generating, in terms of faster clearing in greater numbers, there’s another reason this was called the Clearing Success Congress. For if you’ve ever wondered how it all fits together—the technology, the organizations, the combined force of Scientologists, the answers are all here. From the landmark lecture on the pivotal role of Scientology Organizations in driving planetary clearing, Your Scientology Orgs and What They Do for You, to his exact program on how to make it a reality—World Clearing and You. Here, then, is L. Ron Hubbard’s final Congress and the road map to a Cleared Planet.
79. Clean Hands Congress
It had been a year since his last Congress, and in that time something new, something truly groundbreaking had occurred. Because when Mr. Hubbard announced, “You have a new horizon, a new future,” he was in fact referring to the development of modern auditing leading to the Grade Chart itself. For just as he’d revolutionized auditor training with Training Drills (TRs), he’d now developed a brand-new meter and codified its use in auditing. And even all of that was only a part of something far greater he’d begun: The Saint Hill Special Briefing Course!
Then again, he left no doubt this would be a new type of Congress as well: “I’m not going to pull any punches for you at all.” And he didn’t. For here is where he announced his discovery of the Goals Problem Mass (GPM), “Masses of mental energy, you might say, burned down to the last notch, and nobody can get rid of the cinders.” And that’s just the beginning of what he reveals regarding the GPM—extending back 200 trillion years—in these, the only public lectures ever given on the subject outside the Briefing Course. Moreover, there’s what that discovery revealed in terms of case progress at every level. In fact, as L. Ron Hubbard also reveals, it had everything to do with the development of the E-Meter. In a single word—the subject is Withholds. And when you find out what they do to your bank, how they affect your reach, indeed, your very beingness—you’ll think twice before ever sitting on one. You will also understand why this is the Clean Hands Congress and the route upwards and onwards to freedom.
77. South African Anatomy Congress
Immediately following the Anatomy of the Human Mind Congress in Washington, DC, L. Ron Hubbard flew to Johannesburg. There, he delivered the same Congress, but this time tailored specifically for South Africans. In this unique event, he demonstrates the Anatomy of the Human Mind Course to a capacity Congress—the largest ever—literally demonstrating the rock-solid simplicities of Scientology and how to teach them to others: the time track, start-change-stop, the cycle-of-action, valences, the nature of aberration and much more.
While to better understand and interest new people, he additionally presented the Pre-havingness Scale—a chart spanning the entire gamut of the human race, and charting the levels to bring any being from the very bottom—Inverted Interest—to the very top—Interest.
As a grand finale, he further laid out his embracive program to uplift every man, woman and child in South Africa. Entitled The Future of South Africa, here is Mr. Hubbard’s personal message to the country from which, he said, “will spring the next great civilization on this planet.”
75. Anatomy of the Human Mind
With new breakthroughs in place to reach any case, L. Ron Hubbard was ready to “throw the switch” on planetary expansion. And here is where that switch connected: with a new course to present Dianetics and Scientology basics in a whole new way. It followed from the simple premise: While one can demonstrate chemical reactions or the workings of machines, how does one demonstrate the parts and phenomena of the human mind and spirit? Mr. Hubbard provides the answer, and shows how to do it with the Anatomy of the Human Mind Course.
Here, then, is his onstage demonstration of the “Things of Scientology,” each as solid and real as anything in the physical sciences. As he further explained, no previous field of the mind could ever demonstrate such things as they were all “figure-figure.” Well, there’s none of that here. Not when those live demonstrations included the most colorful and lively demonstrations of any Congress—from test tubes and static electricity, to skulls and brains—all to demonstrate what is the mind and what isn’t. Moreover, here is the means for every Scientologist to show people they are a spiritual being, what the mind really is and that Scientology can help them. And now you know why, in asking attendees, “Where do we go from here?” L. Ron Hubbard gave the answer, “We’re going to go all the way.” For the gates had been opened to bring understanding to everyone.
73. London Congress on Dissemination & Help
The “magic formula” of dissemination! With technology now capable of handling any case, the only remaining barrier was getting them into the session so it could be applied. And that’s the story of L. Ron Hubbard’s discovery of four buttons so powerful, he dubbed them the “Deadly Quartet.”
It all stemmed from his observation that before preclears could make gains, they had to be interested in their own cases. Yet what he found is that most people were below any interest—even in life itself. He tracked that down to basic and found the factor of Help was the major factor. Specifically, previous help had so often failed most felt it wasn’t even possible. That’s what led him to develop Presession Processes—so named since they were necessary before any session could even begin—to bring preclears up to the point where they knew help was possible, and were now interested in getting some!
Moreover, Mr. Hubbard discovered these same factors could be addressed outside the auditing room and, in fact, were the answer to dissemination itself. Indeed, they not only got anyone interested in Scientology, but—since they are a process—provided case gain even when used in dissemination. Here, then, are two lecture series in one. First, he delivered the London Open Evening Lectures, to both Scientologists and their friends—expanding on these factors and, in fact, demonstrating their use in dissemination! Next, to teach their application in both auditing and dissemination, he called together Scientologists for the London Congress on Dissemination & Help. Here, then, are L. Ron Hubbard’s public lectures on bringing Scientology to the world, and the means for you to do the same and so help get the rest of the planet in session.
69. Melbourne Congress
With auditor training courses standardized, clearing technology in broad use and a central dissemination center now established at Saint Hill, L. Ron Hubbard embarked on a round-the-world tour to now ensure the stability of all Scientology organizations. But that tour was only a small steppingstone towards a far grander destination he’d set his sights upon: Operating Thetan. And that’s why his first stop was Australia as the necessary base in the Southern Hemisphere, far away from the potential fallout of East and West warmongers. Here, then, is his message to Australian Scientologists on a responsibility they hold to this day as a last safe harbor. Here, too, is his deeply personal story of how he first forged a bond with Australia when serving as a US Naval Officer through the Second World War.
But while that was, of course, present-life history, it became fully whole track as Mr. Hubbard next made his first public announcement of Recent Developments on OT. And drawing from the whole tangled history of thetans, he reveals the mechanism of how deep-seated aberration reverses the cycle-of-action in a being—moving one from “create” to “destroy.” Moreover, he had found the answer and it was summed up in a single word: Responsibility. It was a breakthrough that would open the gateway to OT, and here is where it first began.
68. Theta Clear Congress
An experiment that riveted the world: Eighteen-foot tomato plants and cucumbers the size of watermelons made global headlines. But what those newspapers knew wasn’t even half of the epic saga surrounding L. Ron Hubbard’s greenhouse plant experiments, and a breakthrough concerning life itself: how the fundamental postulates of survive and succumb interplay in life and result in the game called “victim.”
In the wake of that breakthrough came further discoveries revealing the basic reasons for a being’s postulates of self-destruction, and their solution—Communication Processes sweeping the track clean of core aberrations. Moreover, here’s where application took on a fully massive dimension with the announcement of a new type of auditing enabling one auditor to handle hundreds, or even thousands of preclears at a time. It’s the means to broad scale clearing and planetary salvation.
And yet, no matter the magnitude of these developments, standing behind them was something far greater. For here is the historic Congress where Mr. Hubbard first announced the acquisition of the most famous address in Scientology: Saint Hill Manor, East Grinstead, Sussex, England.
63. London Clearing Congress
The long search for truth, the tortuous journey from culture to culture, the perilous quest into realms few had ever glimpsed, much less ventured—L. Ron Hubbard’s most renowned lecture of all time, The Story of Dianetics and Scientology. And that’s only the first monumental lecture! Beyond is the epic view of Scientology—past, present and future. Beginning with the past, from his current vantage point of Clear, Mr. Hubbard looks back through each previous discovery all the way to the first Clears he made in 1947. What that revealed is the answer to the question: “What happened to the rest of the bank the moment they achieved Clear?” And if the question was startling enough, what the answer revealed was the solution for total stability.
Here, then, is not only the discovery of what prevents a preclear from “erasing” his mental image pictures, but a revelation that quite literally answers what life was like at the moment of creation. All of which opened a new panorama of doingness, extending across every dynamic, and summed up in the phrase “Bring Order.”
So, yes—while L. Ron Hubbard began with a monumental look to the past, by the time this Congress was over, it was the creation of a story that continues to unfold every day, The Future of Scientology and the Western Civilization.
61. Clearing Congress
Invitations said it all—“We did it!” Here, then, is the state of Clear: its dimensions, freedoms and characteristics. Nowhere is it so thoroughly laid out. Defining a Clear in terms of “freedoms from, ” L. Ron Hubbard shows the progressive steps to move anyone toward this state, including the handling of present time problems and ARC breaks. It all culminates in a “magic button” with the power to open up any case, and summed up in one word: Help. As he describes, it handles “something like TNT”—that splits valences, exteriorizes preclears and puts people into session who were formerly not even vaguely auditable.
Directly on the heels of Help as the “heart and soul of the upper dynamics,” comes the yardstick of judgment: how many dynamics does a person compute on instantly? While on the other side of the coin are the negative dynamics —the realm of psychiatrists and makers of the A-bomb. At which point Mr. Hubbard reveals how to bring a being to a state where he can remain at cause, no matter the level of violence in a world gone mad.
Today, Clears exist by the tens of thousands in virtually every country of Earth. Here is the moment, immortalized forever, when the first was announced.
56. London Congress on Nuclear Radiation, Control & Health
A Congress so important, it was held at London’s Royal Empire Society Hall. Having already provided the initial results of his research, with solutions in place to address the immediate effects of radiation, L. Ron Hubbard’s research continued at an even more urgent pace.
Point of fact—in the three months that intervened between Congresses he delivered no less than 83 lectures, personally instructing two Advanced Clinical Courses for auditors. And what that research revealed was not only the rock-bottom eternal answer to radiation, but a technical milestone which stands to this day as the means to reach every case: Control, Communication and Havingness (CCH). It’s a trio he described as ranking in importance with Affinity, Reality and Communication (ARC) and, in application, capable of resolving the problems of Man with a simplicity that cannot be exaggerated.
At the heart of this Congress is Mr. Hubbard’s definitive trilogy of lectures on radiation—lectures so groundbreaking that copies were immediately requested by Members of Parliament and which form the basis of the book, All About Radiation.
53. Washington Congress on Anti-Radiation & Confront
The “Cold War” between America and Russia was heating up. And with world leaders demonstrating their “power” to each other, with ever increasing tests of nuclear bombs, they were also creating consequences they couldn’t conceive. For while a nuclear test in Russia may seem to have nothing to do with an auditing session in Florida, when L. Ron Hubbard discovered there was a link—he acted. That is, quite in addition to its obvious physical effects, radiation was slowing processing and clearing. Moreover, it wasn’t just in the geographic locale of nuclear tests, but virtually planetwide.
What followed was the call for an “Emergency Congress,” in a location that couldn’t have been more appropriate—the Hall of Nations in Washington, DC, overlooking the White House itself. Whereupon Mr. Hubbard first unveiled his research to find any means of addressing the effects of radiation on the body and his discovery of startling effects of nicotinic acid (niacin).
Here’s the full story of what he described as the “educated” vitamin, and the original breakthrough that underlies the technology of the Purification Rundown. Even more, here is the greater story of radiation as not just a present-day problem, but an aberrative factor in practically every incident on the whole track. From that revelation came a flood of breakthroughs applicable to virtually all of life—from the bottom-line solution to psychosis, to new technology for raising a being on the Sub-zero Tone Scale—capable of confronting anything. And that’s just a glimpse of what this Congress contains—bringing solutions to problems as old as time itself, and as current as today’s headlines.
49. Games Congress
What is life? From holiest of temples to everyday streets, it is a question long asked, but never answered. In this Congress, L. Ron Hubbard presents the surprising resolution—all stemming from his groundbreaking research into a subject deceptively irrelevant at first glance, but factually embracing the whole of existence— Life is a game! For notwithstanding the slings and arrows of life, the reason for living and the reason for a game are the same. And whether baseball, polo or chess—by studying the elements of games, we find ourselves in possession of the elements of life.
Here, then, are the components: freedom, barriers and purposes, and the exact factors determining a “game” and a “no-game condition.” He further details the four types of games—including those the being doesn’t know he’s playing—the basis of all aberration. Through lecture after lecture Mr. Hubbard lays out the application of games principles to all life—from individuals, groups and societies to revelations on why a thetan loves problems and, hence, the approach in auditing to not only improve one’s ability to play the game, but to achieve truth itself.
So groundbreaking were these discoveries, they also formed the very core of what else L. Ron Hubbard released at this Congress: Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought—a book he forevermore called, “Book One of Scientology.”
41. Anatomy of the Spirit of Man
Culminating five years of steady advance, the Founding Church of Scientology had just been established in Washington, DC. Summoning Scientologists to the first International Congress in the nation’s capital, L. Ron Hubbard opened with the lecture, The Hope of Man. And the title was more than apt. For what he presented were the results of advancing technology—results that could only be accurately described with a single word: miracles. Physical in nature—deaf children suddenly hearing, crippled children shedding crutches, and sight restored with eyeglasses discarded—and yet all of it accomplished by exclusively addressing the thetan.
Inherent to success was a breakthrough explaining the factors of self-determinism, and the very means to restore it in an individual. And the implications of that discovery were fully epic in nature. Mr. Hubbard not only traces the history of all past religions, but he also reveals how every one of their hoped for dreams can now be achieved. Here, then, is the Congress to be looked back upon as a watershed in history: the advent of Scientology as the world’s first practical religion.
30. Universe Processes Congress
The setting was Phoenix, Arizona, and yet another milestone. Specifically, Duplication, and its role both in the preclear’s ability to As-is and exteriorize and the auditor’s skill to achieve that result. Here is the Congress where L. Ron Hubbard unveiled Procedure 30, comprising three breakthrough processes: the soon-to-be legendary Opening Procedure by Duplication, Problems and Solutions and Granting of Beingness. Yet Congress attendees received far more than a mere description, with Mr. Hubbard delivering these processes to the group.
No matter the rave results, the greater story was yet to come.
First, with technology to reach every case, publication of the first Group Auditor’s Handbook and Group Processing as a mainstay of Scientology.
Second, the breakthroughs of Duplication, resulting in processes to vanquish one’s reactive mind.
And finally, the lightning advance to the full codification of technology from this era of development to the pinnacle of thetan ability.
For within months L. Ron Hubbard had codified not only the Axioms of Scientology, but processes drawn from the very core of those Axioms that crack the very bottom rung of cases and reach to the accomplishment of exterior OT ability. This, then, is the Congress that bridges from theta potentials in Scientology 8-8008 to the state of OT and The Creation of Human Ability.
26. Western Congress
With Scientologists in the western United States clamoring for a Congress in their own locales, L. Ron Hubbard convened a “Western Congress” in Phoenix, Arizona. What particularly set this Congress apart was how he imparted the data on his latest breakthroughs, for as reported in the Journal of Scientology, “presentation of technical material was kept to an absolute minimum, L. Ron Hubbard presenting the majority of the important technique and procedure in the form of processes upon the group.” In this way, he provided a model for delegates to group process people in their own communities, with the concentration on Standard Operating Procedure 8-C (SOP 8-C) and Self Analysis lists. Here, too, was Mr. Hubbard’s introduction of the new audio meter (later known as a “beep meter”), the most advanced meter to date, not only featuring a probe that could register pain spots on a human being but providing the means to demonstrate that a being can create an energy current in another being.
In sum, here was a Congress packed with technical data, expanding the ranks of trained Scientologists who carried these breakthroughs to a broader public and, thereby, generating a healthy crop of new field groups.
23. First International Congress Of Dianeticists and Scientologists
Upon his return to America in late September 1953, nearly 400 delegates gathered in Philadelphia for the First International Congress of Dianeticists & Scientologists. Throughout five days of lectures, seminars and meetings, they received not only an overview of research from the earliest days, but the growth of Dianetics and Scientology in society.
This Congress spans the breadth of Ron’s research from techniques that exteriorize a being as given in Standard Operating Procedure 8 (SOP 8), to the means by which a Scientologist can instill into society the finer qualities of cooperation, love, goodness, mercy and justice.
